New Extension for Animal Sanctuary: A Case Study

Having been awarded a grant from the postcode lottery for their new extension, the Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary sought to look for a local flooring company to help finish the project.

Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary based in Barrow Gurney near Bristol is an independent charity rescuing and rehoming unwanted and abandoned cats and dogs since 1982. Each year they manage to rehome about 800 animals giving them a brighter future with responsible owners.

The sanctuary is situated next to woodlands that are 100 years old and is home to butterflies and other wild species. The team wanted to provide a centre for the community to help protect and look after the local environment and decided to put an extension on their reception to create a research centre as a hub for a biodiversity project.

Now Brownies, Schools and corporate groups use the centre as well as Avon Wildlife who are linked to the Sanctuary.

Finding a Local Flooring Firm

Sarah Schranz, General Manager of the Sanctuary wanted to use a local firm to provide flooring for the new research centre.   Rivendell came up on the short list and it was the picture of our ex CEO Binks (the dog) on the Rivendell website that swung it for Sarah. She felt sure that a company with a dog would understand the needs of Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary.

Flooring in Keeping with the Environment

Holly Hedge’s vision was to have flooring that was both hard-wearing and durable given the number of visitors and four-legged friends that pass through the centre and sanctuary, but also sympathetic to the surrounding woodland and the wood-effect exterior of the building. In addition, she was very mindful that she wanted to spend the grant wisely and in the most efficient way.

Rivendell helped Sarah to work through the different flooring options and they decided upon oak-effect vinyl. Not only would it match the oak beams in the extension, but it was a practical solution with minimal maintenance and was the best quality for their budget.

Once the flooring was decided, Rivendell set about testing the moisture level of the concrete flooring of the extension and advised on having it screeded to minimise this.  The vinyl flooring was then laid by the Rivendell fitters to provide a beautiful and durable end result.

A Message from Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary

“I am really pleased with the end-result.” Says Sarah Schranz “The oak-effect flooring really helped to finish off the research centre and it ties in beautifully with the surrounding woodland.

The team from Rivendell were very quick with their quote and turnaround. The fitters were professional, clean and tidy – you wouldn’t have known they were there! Which was so important as the sanctuary is a busy place. They were in and out – it was perfect.

I also really appreciated the advice we got from Rivendell about how to look after our new flooring and the fact that their consultation service meant they came out to our premises.”
